Byron Kennedy Award
At the 2009 Samsung Mobile AFI Awards Ceremony, and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Byron Kennedy Award, the AFI acknowledged Ray Brown, legendary grip, gentleman, statesman and hero unsung, and awarded him the Byron Kennedy Award for his superb, solution-orientated management skills, his spirited advocacy of the industry, and for his full-hearted mentorship and support of movies great and small. For those who strive for excellence…Brownie is the exemplar.
Amongst film crews in Australia it is widely known that being trained by 'Brownie' is a mark of excellence, and being a member of his team is to be recognised as belonging to a group of the best.
For more than 30 years now, one way or another, Brownie has had a hand in almost every film made in this country.
The Byron Kennedy Award honours a practitioner whose body of work embodies the qualities of Byron Kennedy: innovation, vision and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Presented by Kennedy Miller Mitchell, in association with the AFI, this AFI Award includes a cash prize of $10,000, and the recipient is selected by an appointed jury annually.
By recognising Ray Brown’s unwavering contribution, the AFI celebrates the collaborative art of story telling through film.
The AFI acknowledge and thank Kennedy Miller Mitchell for their 25 years of ongoing support and contribution to this special AFI Award.
