SAMSUNG CREATE
NURTURING THE NEXT GENERATION OF AUSTRALIAN FILM MAKERS
Samsung Create Winners & Judges
In September, Samsung in partnership with the AFI launched a short film competition called Samsung Create, which offered young emerging film-makers with the challenge of creating a 60 second short film that would then be presented and viewed upon a mystery ‘art installation digital display’. The final three fortunate entrants were flown to Sydney to attend the announcement event, and launch of the new Samsung LED televisions. Upon arrival, they were greeted by a giant hummingbird, featuring 26 Samsung LED screens.
Unique to this short film competition, entrants were vying for the amazing prizes including a $10,000 winners cash prize, Samsung product, AND the opportunity to have their short film be viewed by audiences nationally when the Samsung LED Bird tours the country’s shopping centres. And lastly, the winning film will also feature as a 30 second television commercial, set to be broadcast during the AFI Awards in December.

The three finalist short films were viewed by all attending guests, and then judged by a special panel of Australia’s best talent, appointed by the AFI.
Claudia Karvan, Erik Thomson, Stephen Curry and Damon Gameau were set the difficult challenge to decided the order of the winner, runner-up and third place. The winners Ben Crisp and Miles Rowland were thrilled to receive the ‘novelty cheque’ on stage with all judges, AFI CEO Damian Trewhella and Mark Leathan, Head of Consumer Electronics Marketing, Samsung.
The AFI was delighted to offer this incredible opportunity for young emerging film-makers, so as to encourage them to develop their skills, craft and passion for creative store telling. Such opportunities for celebration and active support of Australia’s next generation of filmmakers are few, but it was clear that Samsung Create displayed and showcased the caliber of talent that exists.
Mark Leathan, Head of Consumer Electronics Marketing said. " Samsung Create is the first of many opportunities we hope to offer young creative and artistic people in Australia to develop their skills in film and digital content creation. The response to Samsung Create was fantastic with the work exceeding our expectations in terms of creativity and technical brilliance.
